May 2013 - Hexham Morris dancers are now preparing for a trip to Charleston in South Carolina, USA. Northumbria University have been awarded a major grant to support an ambitious research project focussed on the English Diaspora in North America. The project is a partnership between Northumbria University and Charleston College in South Carolina, USA.
The project has already highlighted a wide range of cultural and recreational activities, from the obvious (cricket) to less familiar (e.g. Sons of St George which celebrated communal solidarity and English traditions). Besides generating books and academic articles (via PhD studies) the project will sponsor cultural events on both sides of the Atlantic to promote shared knowledge and understanding of each other’s cultural heritage.
Hexham Morris will visit Charleston at the time of a major performing arts festival (Spoleto Festival USA) and contribute to ‘Piccolo Spoleto’ which promotes community arts events. They will demonstrate English Folk dancing, music and song in a range of contexts including dancing in large arenas, academic lectures and workshops for school age children which will be integral to the purpose of the project.
